सरल शब्दों में व्यवस्थित तरीके से रहने को वास्तु शास्त्र कहा जाता है। वास्तु की उत्पत्ति कैसे हुई इसे बेहद संक्षिप्त शब्दों में समझते हैं। काफी समय पहले शिवजी के पसीने से विराट आकार का वास्तु पुरूष उत्पन्न हुआ जिसने सारे लोकों को घेरना शुरू कर दिया, फिर ब्रह्मा जी की आज्ञा से देवताओं व असुरों ने मिलकर उस वास्तु पुरूष को औंधे मुँह भूमि पर गिरा दिया और सभी देवता और असुर उस वास्तु पुरूष के उपर बैठ गये।
जो भी देवता व असुर जहाँ-जहाँ विराजमान हुये वह उनके स्थान कहलाये। जब वास्तु पुरूष उनसे अपने आपको स्वतंत्र न हो पाया तो वह रूदन करने लगा। उसका रूदन सुनकर ब्रह्मा जी वहाँ आये, तो वास्तु पुरूष ने कहा प्रभु यह कैसी स्थिति है तब ब्रह्मा जी ने कहा कि धरती पर जो भी व्यक्ति अपना भवन निर्माण करवायेगा, तो निर्माण कार्य शुरू करने से पहले वह तुम्हारा पूजन अवश्य करेगा। और तुम्हारे अनुसार अपने भवन का निर्माण करवायेगा। ऐसा न करने पर वह तुम्हारे कोप का भागी बनेगा, तुम अपने अनुसार उसको फल या निष्फल दे सकते हो। इस तरह से वास्तु शास्त्र की उत्पत्ति हुई।
अब बात करते हैं वास्तु के प्रभाव की, सामान्य जीवन में वास्तु किस तरह मनुष्य को प्रभावित करता है, इसको एक उदाहरण के द्वारा समझते हैं। सामान्य रूप से चार दिशायें होती हैं- पूर्व, पश्चिम, उत्तर व दक्षिण। वास्तु शास्त्र में चार दिशाओं को 16 भागों में बाँटकर कार्य किया जाता है इसलिये हम वास्तु में 16 दिशायें कहते हैं। 16 दिशायें निकालने के पश्चात जो दिशायें आती हैं उसमें एक दिशा होती है पूर्व-दक्षिण-पूर्व। यदि आपके भवन में पूजा घर इस दिशा में बना हुआ है तो आप सही निर्णय नही ले पायेंगे और हमेशा यहाँ रहने वाले सदस्य जो भी यहाँ पूजा करेंगे उनके मन में किसी भी बात को लेकर बहुत ज्यादा और बहुत दिनों तक मंथन चलता रहता है।
इसी तरह प्रत्येक गतिविधि के लिये वास्तु में पहले से स्थान तय होता है, व इस नियम अनुसार चलने पर सुख-समृद्धि सरलतापूर्वक मिल जाती है।
