जिस समय दैत्यराज बलि ने तीनों लोकों पर अधिकार कर लिया था और उसकी चरम पर थी जिस कारण सभी देवता परेशान हुए और उस स्थिति से निवारण के लिए वे सभी देवता भगवान विष्णु के पास पहुंचे।
तब भगवान विष्णु ने देवताओं की समस्यायें सुनने के पश्चात उनके कल्याण का उपाय समुद्रमंथन बताया। उन्होने कहा कि क्षीरसागर के गर्भ में अनेक दिव्य पदार्थों के साथ-साथ अमृत भी छिपा है और उसे पीने वाले के सामने मृत्यु भी पराजित हो जाती है।
भगवान विष्णु के सुझाव के अनुसार इन्द्र सहित सभी देवता दैत्यराज बलि के पास संधि का प्रस्ताव लेकर गए और उन्हें अमृत के बारे में बताकर समुद्र मंथन करने के लिए तैयार किया। समुद्र मंथन के लिए समुद्र में मंदराचल पर्वत को स्थापित कर वासुकि नाग को रस्सी बनाया गया।
उसके बाद दोनों ही पक्ष अमृत-प्राप्ति के लिए समुद्र मंथन करने लगे। दोनों ही अमृत पाने की इच्छा से सभी बड़े जोश और वेग से मंथन कर रहे थे।
यह लीला आदि शक्ति ने भगवान विष्णु के कच्छप अवतार और सृष्टि के संचालन के लिए रची थी। देव और दैत्यों ने मिलकर समुद्र मंथन किया तो उसमें से 14 रत्न निकले-
1. विष - बुरे विचार
2. कामधेनु गाय - मनोकामना पूरी करने वाली
3. उच्चैश्रवा घोड़ा - मन
4. ऐरावत हाथी - इन्द्र यानि बुद्वि
5. मणि - विचार शुद्वता
6. कल्प वृक्ष - इच्छा पूरी करने वाला वृक्ष
7. रम्भा - वासना
8. लक्ष्मी - विष्णु जी की पत्नि
9. वरूणी देवी - मदिरा
10. चन्द्रमा - शीतलता (भगवान शिव के मणिस्थ पद है)
11. पारिजात वृक्ष - सफलता प्राप्त करने के लिये
12. पांचजन्य शंख - भगवान विष्णु
13. धनवन्तरी - निरोगी के लिये
14. अमृत - अम्रता, अमरता
